Description
A finely crafted male sculpture, carved from a very dense wood, possibly ironwood and featuring delicate and precise linear designs and detailed coiffure and beard. The sculpture features some raised designs as well. Makonde peoples, tanzania, Africa. Ex Prof. Charles Bordogna collection, New Jersey. Professor Charles Bordogna served as curator of the SMA Fathers African Art Museum in tenafly , NJ from 1982 until 1996. Bordogna is the author of several publications on African Art, including "Masks of Liberia", " A Tanzanian Tradition" and "Surfaces: Ritual Application on African Sculpture" (Co-authored with Leonard Kahan, P.Imperato, D. Page) as well as other text's.
Condition
Losses to both arms and legs, what remains is as hard as steel.
