Description
A carved wooden ancestor idol with stylized coiffure, elongated form and features and raised linear designs. The remains of raised areas on the back suggest the idol may have had decorative elements attached at one time, and likely has long arms , though they are lost at the elbow now. The Dogon will carve such idols for use as mediums to the spirit world and the realm of their ancestors.The sculpture measures 23 inches tall on a high quality professional display stand.Dogon peoples, Mali, West Africa. Provenance: Private collection, New York.
