Description
Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Coggled and Brushed Foliate Decorations, Stamped "T WARNE. Co / SOUTH AMBOY," New Jersey, circa 1797-1805, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, the rim and shoulder further embellished with a coggled vertical elipse design. Front of jar impressed with the rare maker's mark of Thomas Warne, used before his involvement with son-in-law, Joshua Letts, circa 1797-1805. Pieces bearing this particular South Amboy mark are quite rare, this jar being only the second such example we have offered. A greenish-brown slip, presumably salted Albany slip, is applied over the maker's mark and handle terminals, and a brushed leaf decorates the reverse side of the jar. Provenance: Found decades ago in the northeastern U.S. Large discolored in-the-firing contact mark on reverse. Some lesser in-the-firing surface flaws, typical of stoneware from this early time period. Rim chips. Heavy chipping to base.
