Item Details
Description
Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Abstract Cobalt Decoration, possibly Adam States, Sr., Manhattan, NY, South Amboy, NJ, or Greenwich, CT origin, mid 18th century, ovoid jar with distinctive tooled spout, the shoulder decorated with three pairs of vertically-trailed cobalt lines, interspersed with a design of a small X surrounded by spots and a second stylized design surrounded by spots. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The jug's spout construction and thick slip-trailing suggest it may be the product of Adam States, Sr., an influential potter active during the mid 18th century in South Amboy, NJ, Manhattan, NY, and Greenwich, CT, under whom the famous Greenwich potter, Abraham Mead, apprenticed. Numerous small, shallow chips along base. Some light exfoliation to shoulder area. In-the-firing iron pings to surface, including a small iron ping to top of rim and a 3/4" iron ping to base on reverse.
