Description
Scarce Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Stamped "JCM", possibly Daniel Seagle, Lincoln County, NC, circa 1840, ovoid jug with finely-tooled spout and ribbed handle, the surface covered in an olive-green alkaline glaze with dark glass runs to shoulder area. Impressed "JCM" above a two-gallon capacity mark below spout on front. This jug exhibits a highly-skilled potting style, indicating it was made by Daniel Seagle or an associate. The mark "J. C M" remains a mystery, but possibly refers to a merchant or potter trained by Seagle. Heavy chipping to top edge of spout. Minor base wear.
