Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug, Stamped "BENNINGTON FACTORY", Captain John Norton, Bennington, VT, early 19th century, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout and ribbed handle, decorated with a brushed cobalt number "2". Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and lower handle terminal. The rarest and earliest Norton family maker's mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in New York. Very nice, as-made condition with two shallow, in-the-firing contact marks to top of spout.
