J.L", Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts, South Amboy, NJ, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated completely around the shoulder with a coggled column design with serrated edge. Front and reverse further decorated with an inverted, impressed design of a stylized drape, highlighted in purplish manganese slip. Additional brushed manganese slip appears at the handle terminals and highlighting the initialed maker's mark of Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts. Desirable maker with beautiful color to the slip decoration and clay body. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A tight 5 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. An X-shaped line on underside, two lines from which extend 6"and 3 1/4" up reverse. An in-the-firing surface separation on interior, visible as some very faint crazing under one handle on exterior. A minor, in-the-firing base chip.
