WILLEM JANSZOON BLAEU (DUTCH, 1571-1638) OR HEIRS MAP OF VIRGINIA, hand-colored, on laid paper, titled "NOVA VIRGINIAE TABULA", with inset scene upper left depicting Powhatan's lodge interior, lettered "STATUS REGIS POWHATAN / quando prefectus Smith Captivus / ili daretur", cartouche in upper right with key, and bottom center cartouche lettered "Ex officina Guilielmi Blaeuw" under scale, with "DGrijp" and "Sculpt." below; after the work of John Smith. Unframed. Willem Janszoon Blaeu; engraver Dirck Grijp (Dutch, 17th C.). Mid 17th century. 15" x 19 1/4" sight, 17 7/8" x 21 7/8" OA.
Very good condition overall, expected fold-line down center, some minor toning/discoloration, some minimal foxing.

Provenance: Property Deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Virginia. All proceeds to benefit the Collections Acquisitions Fund.
Catalogue Note: The present lot is Willem Blaeu's reissue of Jodocus Hondius, Jr.'s initial map based on John Smith's original 1612 charting of Virginia. Blaeu purchased the plate from Hondius' widow in 1629, and he and his heirs produced a number of editions throughout the second and third quarters of the 17th century. This important early map of Virginia was distributed widely throughout Europe and served as something of a signal to world powers at the time of the rising English presence in the New World.
