Fauvist watercolor by Andre Derain, c.1920. This watercolor is an exciting find, having turned up in the Estate of Hans Arthur Otto Liebmann in Hannacroix New York. Artist Otto Liebmann, known as Harold Liebmann, was born in Germany and studied at the Kunstschule in Weimar.After WWI Leibmann studied painting with Andre Derain, then went to Holland to teach art at The Hague where he met Lois, his future wife,who was born in Kiev. For the next two years they developed a dance routine that they performed at, amongst other places, the Ambassador Hotel in Paris. In 1938 they were placed in a concentration camp by Mussolini when they were in Italy but were eventually released and went to America where they settled in upstate New York.Estate of Hans Arthur Otto Liebmann, Hannacroix, and by descent Lara Stewart Estate. Dimensions: with frame H 27", W 21.5", picture H 24", W 18.5"NOte: This watercolor is on paper laid down on board.It is the back of the board that has the French inscription, "Derain baingneurs,epoque Fauves", in other words, "Derain-bathers Fauve period".See the images we posted.
Condition
Good condition overall.There are notes in French on the reverse identifying it as a Fauvist work by Derain, signed:"a.derain" twice on the front. See the photos.
