This lot consists of a watercolor illustration on paper, done in the rich Neoclassicist style of Andre Derain (French, 1880-1954). Image depicts a brilliantly colored still life scene. Succulent pears and pink carnations create rich splashes of color against a sumptuous fabric background. Handwritten inscription at lower left reads, "Derain". An outstanding addition to any collector's gallery. This unframed piece measures approximately 14" x 19.75".

Andre Derain (French, 1880-1954) was born just outside of Paris and began studying art at the age of 15. At the turn of the 20th century, he began his engineering studies, only to find that his true interest lied in painting. It was in this creative pursuit that he met and became close friends with Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). Derain would soon become a painter, sculptor, and co-founder of the Fauvist art movement - this he did with his friend, Matisse. Derain's creative application of color in the familiar subject matter of landscapes and figural studies quickly became a hallmark of his work.
