Description
**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, Japan, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautiful theatrical mask, hand-carved from hardwood, depicting an imposing demonic guise. Masks depicting Japanese demons, known as an "oni," are typically characterized by pierced teardrop-form eyes and fiery eyebrows, a broad nose, muscular jaw line, exposed teeth, and a pair of horns projecting from the brow. The form of this mask is referred to as "Hannya," a vengeful female spirit who has become corrupted due to intense jealousy or obsession. This example employs real teeth - perhaps those of a boar or another mammal - to imbue a naturalistic appearance when worn during Noh performances as well as Shinto ritual kagura dances. A marvelous example of history and thespianism! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 5.75" W x 8.625" H (14.6 cm x 21.9 cm); 12.875" H (32.7 cm) on included custom stand.
