Item Details
Description
Africa, Nigeria, Bini (Edo), ca. early 20th century CE. A carved wooden mask depicting a human face with domed eyes, a slightly curved nose, large eye slits fo the wearer, and petite puckered lips. This visage is topped by a figural superstructure comprised of birds and anthropomorphic forms. Such masks were worn by members of the Ekpo, a male society that takes care of the welfare of the village and settles disputes. Members of the Ekpo don these masks to impersonate their ancestors. The Ekpo also have traditionally performed rituals related to planting, the yam harvest, and funerals. Beyond this, masks also played a role in rituals created to appease the gods and to protect against illness.
