Description
**Originally Listed At $2500**

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd century BCE. Finely carved in the round save the flat verso (one might describe the piece as extremely high relief) - a white marble bust depicting Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, and procreation, depicted with sensitively rendered facial features and a wavy, centrally parted, pulled back coiffure. Truly life-like, despite the goddess' mythical status, this naturalistic visage demonstrates that the sculptor was virtuosic in his ability to bring marble to life! The votive statue may have been placed in a small household altar, or given as an offering at a temple dedicated to the goddess. Mounted on a lucite block base. Size: 5.25" H (13.3 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.

The sculptor of this piece modeled the beautiful goddess of romantic love with the utmost sensitivity and skill. She is depicted with her head ever so slightly tipped to the right, her attractive coiffure parted at the center and swept back in a twist along the contours of her forehead, her wavy tresses painstakingly delineated. The goddess' elegant, oval face is skillfully modeled so as to present a naturalistic visage with a rounded forehead, large and generously lidded almond-shaped eyes also presenting vividly defined irises and pupils, a fine browline that arches gracefully and merges with the bridge of her nose, a soft rounded chin, and full, bow-shaped, pursed lips.

Aphrodite (Venus in the Roman pantheon) has inspired countless depictions throughout art history, among the most famous, Attic sculptor Praxiteles's "Aphrodite of Knidos" (ca. 360 to 330 BCE), the equally famous "Lely's Venus" (ca. 100 to 199 CE), Alexandros of Antioch's "Venus de Milo" ( 130 to 100 BCE), the Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli's masterful painting "Birth of Venus" (1484-86), and Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens' equally masterful "Judgement of Paris" (ca. 1636) painting.

Provenance: private Connecticut, USA collection, acquired from Alexander Fine Art, 1999
