Chinese grisaille painting of an official being soothed by a group of female figures on paper. Hand-painted Chinese semi-cursive characters, with an iron-red seal, is located on the right side of the image. The official is reclined in an officer’s chair while one female figure soothes him by playing the GuQin. The Guqin is a seven-string Chinese melodic instrument. Favored by pedagogues and literati as an instrument of great delicacy and refinement. It is referred to as "the father of Chinese music" or "the instrument of the sages". This painting demonstrates the artist's ability to use varying shades of the grey-scale to better represent depth. Di-gan Rod is firm and true allowing for the scroll to be wrapped easily and transported safely. Very well preserved and presented in a crème-colored palate.
