Near East, Holy Land, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 3rd to 5th century CE. A lovely pair of Holy Land terracotta vessels. First is a blackware pilgrim's flask with twin nubbin-shaped feet, an oval body with large, low-relief floral designs, twin loop handles, a thin neck, and a flared rim. Next is a terracotta spindle vessel with a narrow foot, elongated pedestal, a thin, disc-shaped body, tubular neck, and a slight flared rim. Two wonderful examples of ancient Holy Land craftsmanship! Size (spindle vessel): 4.625" H (11.7 cm); Size (pilgrim's flask): 4" H (10.2 cm).
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

Flask has neck and one handle reattached, and loss to other handle. Both vessels have expected age-commensurate surface wear as shown, surface roughness, minor chips, and earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
