Item Details
Description
Holy Land, Iron Age I, ca. 1200 to 1000 BCE. This is a pretty example of a terracotta ampulla vessel commonly called a "pilgrim" flask, with a circular, flattened, gourd-like body. It has loop handles and a cylindrical neck with a flared lip and thickened rim. Items like these were used to carry home holy water or oil from the lamps burning in the sacred sanctuaries that they had visited on their travels. Religious pilgrimages to pagan sites were important journeys that many people in antiquity would undertake at some point in their lifetime. This item is both functional and pretty. Size: 5.5" W x 7" H (14 cm x 17.8 cm)

CP The First 4000 Years, the Ratner Collection of Judaean Antiquities, by A Kozloff.
