Description
Byzantine Empire, ca. 500 CE. This is a pottery flask with a lentoid body, a narrow neck, and two handles for suspension (though one is now gone). Pilgrim flasks, also known as ampullae, often were stamped with symbols for where they were from; this one shows a person in the center flanked by what may be a fish or a monkey. Size: 2.75" W x 3.75" H (7 cm x 9.5 cm).
