(French 1770-1841) A PAIR OF DIRECTOIRE STYLE POLYCHROME AND NEEDLEPOINT BEECH FAUTEILS, PARIS, FIRST QUARTER 19TH CENTURY, the square backs with grooved stiles and rails, centering 18th century, Aubusson style, vegetable dyed, silk and wool needlepoint upholstery, the backs designed with figures of maidens, over tapestry covered seats with a goat and wolf (respectively) within red bordered reserves, surrounded by floral festoon and leafy sprigs, tending with adorsed dragons, centering a lion mask, all within clam shell carved joint, sloping, grooved arms, ending in rosette carved hand terminals, above a register of Neoclassical style reed carving, raised on ring turned tapered supports with carved lotus leaves, above repeating Neoclassical reed carving, over floret carved blocks, all on ring turned, tapered, leaf carved legs, terminating in French toes, joined by a guilloché carved skirt, with traces of cream and gray paint throughout, each bearing a partially legible printed and hand inscribed label, "GUARDE MEUBLES #43 and #44 (respectively) Etabts. Condition
Heavy losses to paint decoration all over. Fading of dye in upholstery, various repairs, tears and general wear throughout. Upholstery likely not original. There are minor chips to the carving with losses, but overall in very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
