Description
A Very rare, old and interesting wooden marionette / puppet from southern Nigeria. The Ogoni Amanikpo Marionette figures are much sought after by collectors. The Ogoni have a secret society known as "Amanikpo" and although the masquerades and performances are public, much of the societies practices are held in secret, away from the public eye and often at night. This is a genuine antique example and is most fascinating. A Chief like figure seated and holding a human skull and a sword. painted white, black and some various colors to accent the details. This Puppet has a fully functioning articulated jaw, controlled by the stick running down the tall handle. The puppets were performed behind a curtain, and only the upper portion was seen by the audience. There is no doubt this is a well worn and well used old example, likely dating to the first half of the 20th century. The Puppet measures 29 inches tall. * There is no base included.Shipping weight of 7 lbs
