A vintage carved wooden effigy of a Mother holding her child. Bembe peoples, Congo, Africa.Of note is how she is holding the child, who rests on their side with stiff arms and posture. Perhaps a sick or deceased child.The statue has some fine tribal "tattoo" work as well as a wonderfully carved face which looks upwards towards the heavens. A really nice emotional expression was achieved as well as a wonderful patina and overall classic form. This is likely a mid- century example, perhaps a bit older. I do NOT see old Bembe works offered very often.Acquired from a collection which was in storage since the 1980/90's So the sculpture is certainly a vintage to antique example.Measures 19 inches tall.
