**First Time At Auction**
Western Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fine sculpture of a standing, nude anthropomorphic figure, hand-carved from a hard wood, with delineated legs, a rotund abdomen, and arms flush with the torso. A bulbous head displays hemispheric eyes, a prominent nose, petite mouth, semicircular ears, and a V-shaped coiffure atop a broad brow line. This style of figure is called a "bateba," a traditional doll carved by artisans in Lobi society and is believed to act on the behalf of the carver. Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 10.5" H (26.7 cm); 11" H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired prior to 1970
