**Originally Listed At $300**

Africa, Sierra Leone, Temne people, ca. early 20th century CE. A figural carving of a human with a prominent phallus and a seemingly-pregnant stomach - perhaps representing an intersex individual or someone in a transformative state. The figure is painted mostly black (much of the pigment remains), with white paint in the eyes and a small dab of silvery pigment around the mouth. The body presents a smooth finish, with short, straight hair created by incised lines. The face puts forth a direct expression, with a small mouth and deep-set eyes. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.5" W x 10.8" H (8.9 cm x 27.4 cm); height on stand: 13.6" (34.5 cm)

The Temne people live in northwestern and central Sierra Leone. The various ethnic groups of Sierra Leone have different carving styles based on where they live; the Temne fall into the savannah group, whose carvings are less ornate, relying on simple forms and bold lines. Wood figural carvings play an important role in the ceremonial and religious life of the community, often representing twins.
