West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi tribe, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden dish of a shallow form resting atop a quartet of conical legs. Dense crosshatch patterns are incised atop the squat rim, and a protruding rectangular 'head' doubles as a handle with a central perforation and incised linear motifs. The broad, shallow style of the dish suggests it was likely used for serving, though the form may perhaps have also been utilized as a divination or shamanic table.
