Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari (Wari) and Chimu Cultures, ca. 700 to 1470 CE.wo earthtone textile fragments from two different but equally-important Peruvian cultures. Both primarily present brown and cream hues; however, they also display shades of gold, blue, red, and green. The composition of the smaller textile includes rows of cream-colored squares, surrounded by thick deep-brown bands, and features abstract bird-like figures. The larger textile is comprised of an outer band of concentric circular patterns, a large inner section of multi-colored abstract zoomorphic figures which exhibit feline characteristics, and an upper section of thin fiber strands which extend in all directions. The smaller fragment is mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing, and the larger on a satin-lined cardboard backing. Size: 6" L x 4" W (15.2 cm x 10.2 cm) for the smaller; and 8.375" L x 5" W (21.3 cm x 12.7 cm) for the larger. Size: 8.375" L x 5" W (21.3 cm x 12.7 cm)
Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia from 1971 to 1972
