Description
Greece, Corinthia, ca. 6th century BCE. A very attractive aryballos (a vessel used to hold scented oils and perfumes in the bath) of a classic apple-shaped form with a circular flat rim and a single wide, short strap handle. The body is decorated with a pair of standing geese or ducks and an abstract mask motif in red and black pigments with incised details. Additionally, a radiating ray/petal pattern adorns the shoulder. During this time, Corinthian ceramics showed the influence of eastern trade connections with the city - creating art with stylized plants and animal friezes, inspired by trade with the Levant, Egypt, and Assyria. This is known as the "Orientalizing Period." Size: 3.65" W x 4.45" H (9.3 cm x 11.3 cm)
