Central Asia, India, Naga peoples, ca. 1959 CE. A gorgeous, heavy, glass bead necklace made by the Naga culture composed mainly of bright, sky blue seed beads, with larger multi-colored beads at the point that hangs furthest from the neck. At the neck, the many strands are woven into a textile pattern with another row of multi-colored beads through it. The clasp is joined with a coin with excellent patina - an Indian coin from 1959. The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma; during the time that this necklace was made, they still led a very traditional lifestyle and engaged in headhunting. During the great ritual occasions in their calendar, men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including a necklace like this one. Still wearable! Size: 17.9" L (45.5 cm)
