South Asia, India, Naga peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A gorgeous glass bead necklace made by the Naga culture composed of 41 strands of hundreds of cyan, navy, crimson, and white glass barrel beads. The main support strand is comprised of rough-textured, beige-hued natural fibers, one end with a formed loop and the other with a cylindrical fastener with decorative beaded tassels. Divided by 2 horizontal bands of red beads that connect all of the other strands, the center of the necklace boasts vibrant sky-blue beads flanked by 2 sections with an alternating pattern of navy and white beads. An additional strand of white, blue, and red beads connects the 2 sides of the fastener. The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma known for their artistry, particularly when it comes to jewelry. During special rituals on their calendar, men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including stunning necklaces like this wearable example! Size: 30.5" L (77.5 cm)
