Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 14th to 15th century CE. A cast bronze figural handle and upper framework of a bell, depicting Yamantaka (sometimes Yamataka), the Lord of Death in Vajrayana Buddhism. His has a fearsome countenance, with an open, snarling mouth lined with teeth, and two horns projecting from his scaly head. A heavy, curved hook is placed between his horns for attachment. Below his body is a ring of flame-like motifs that are attached to a thick bronze disc. Although Yamantaka seems fierce and devilish, he is also compassionate, seen as turning his wrath against the forces of anger, hate, and death that work against humanity. Size: 2.4" W x 5" H (6.1 cm x 12.7 cm); 5.4" H (13.7 cm) on included custom stand.
