**First Time At Auction**
Rome, Roman Empire to Byzantine Empire, ca. 1st to 6th century CE. A wonderful ensemble of ten mold-made terracotta oil lamps from the Roman and Byzantine empires. Two Roman lamps have ovoid profiles with low-relief linear designs around the shoulders, one with a pierced handle and the other with a tab-shaped handle; one has a circular body with a curvilinear motif around the shoulders and a floral design in the recessed tondo; and the last has a tiered body with a raised fill hole and applied loop handle. Six Byzantine-era lamps have either flat or tab-shaped handles, large fill holes, ringed bases, and pronounced neck channels. A superb gathering for any collection! Size of largest: 4.5" L (11.4 cm).

Condition
All lamps have expected age-commensurate surface wear, minor losses, and earthen and mineral deposits. Some have stable fissures, some have char marks to wick spouts, and some have fading to adorning details. Nevertheless a very nice group.
