Description
**First Time At Auction**
West Africa, Burkina Faso, Bozo peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fantastic piece, a helmet mask hand-carved from wood depicting an antelope's head with huge, curved horns, carved to have distinctive serrated edges. The head is brightly painted with a deep red pigment. The eyes, nose, and mouth are black-outlined with white interiors, and the perky, large ears also have white interiors. The base of the helmet, meanwhile, is unpainted - perhaps it was meant to be covered with a cloth or raffia, as holes drilled through it attest to attachments that have since been lost. Size: 8.4" W x 25.75" H (21.3 cm x 65.4 cm)
Provenance: ex Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
