Description
**Originally Listed At $200**
Egypt, Late Period, 26th Dynasty to Alexander the Great, ca. 664 to 300 BCE. A miniature faience ushabti, glazed a vibrant turquoise blue color, with incised hieroglyphs on its lower body, a mummy head, and raised agricultural implements in its hands. The ancient Egyptians believed that after they died, their spirits would have to work in the "Field of Reeds" owned by the god of the underworld, Osiris. This meant doing agricultural labor - and it was required by all members of society, from workers to pharaohs. Although by this period, wood ushabti seem to have been used only by the middle classes (as opposed to the nicer faience ones used by the upper class), the word ushabti may have been derived from "swb" (stick) or "shab"(the Persea tree from which the earliest ushabti were carved). Size: 0.65" W x 2.75" H (1.7 cm x 7 cm)
Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, acquired over twenty years ago
