Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $150**

West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A striking example of a mask hand-carved from cane wood. This particular example has narrow eyes, a prominent nose and ears, and a small, closed mouth. The mask has hair carved in a large, elaborate coiffure of points, including two tall points that tower above the head; this hairstyle signifies a bride or beautiful maiden of marriageable age with her hair dressed for success. Raised marks at the temples and above the eyes indicate a practice of scarification amongst the Ogoni. Size: 4" L x 6.5" W x 13.8" H (10.2 cm x 16.5 cm x 35.1 cm)

Provenance: Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired before 1970
