Africa, north of Cameroon, Tikar, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-built earthenware jar in the form of a human or possibly simian head with coffee bean shaped eyes, a protruding long nose with delineated nostrils, cup-shaped ears perforated for attaching ornaments, and a wide-open mouth. Scarification marks are incised across the cheeks and down the nasal ridge. A very unusual piece from this understudied culture. Size: 7.75" L x 5.25" W x 4.5" H (19.7 cm x 13.3 cm x 11.4 cm)
