Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fabulous set of three hand-built terracotta female figures in either a standing, seated, or kneeling position. The standing figure has attenuated limbs with stylized digits, a protruding abdomen, and rounded shoulders. Her head rests upon a thick neck and displays characteristic "sheepface" details such has coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a conical nose, and a tall forehead with a thin headband. The seated figure has a rotund form and a lengthy skirt, broad shoulders, and a large head with a rounded chin and slit-shaped eyes. The kneeling figure has a short skirt, attenuated limbs, and similar sheepface qualities as the standing figure; however, she displays a more-elaborate headdress as well as shell-form earspools. All figures are deep-red in color with white-painted details, and all are wonderful examples of shaft-tomb pottery! Size: 5.875" H (14.9 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields and Riverbend Gallery
