Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco culture, ca. 1150 to 550 BCE. A wonderful selection of three hand-built pottery female figures from the ancient Tlatilco culture. First is a standing Xolostoc type K maternal figure holding a rather large child in her arms with remains of red-orange pigment across the exterior surfaces. Second is a squat and charming woman with a stout upper body, a pleated skirt, attenuated limbs, and a head with red-orange pigment on the eyes and bound coiffure. The tallest figure bears a slender body above ample hips and has perky breasts, impressed eyes, and furrowed brows beneath a protruding coiffure bun. Lucite display stands for photography purposes only. Size of largest (ample hips): 1.9" W x 4.7" H (4.8 cm x 11.9 cm)
Provenance: Estate of R. Condition
Tallest figure has loss to right arm and tip of right foot. Stout figure has head from another figure, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines; mother with child is intact and very good. All figures have fading to original pigment, with light encrustations and abrasions. Nice remains of pigment.
