Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two fabulous seated terracotta female figures, hand-built and detailed in red slip with white-painted adornments. Both statues exhibit characteristic Jalisco "sheepface" visages comprised of thin mouths, pointed ears with discoid earspools, conical noses, and coffee-bean-shaped eyes. Each figure rests upon one leg folded underneath the other, both covered with a broad skirt. Both females hold a petite bowl in one hand, with the other touching their respective faces. Globular breasts, slight distended abdomens, rounded shoulders, and thick necks complete the overall body structures, and elongated foreheads display simple headbands. A truly wonderful duo of shaft-tomb pottery effigies! Size of largest: 8.875" H (22.5 cm).
