Item Details
Description
Greek, Athens, Attic Period, 5th century BCE. The upper portion of an elaborate, valuable cast bronze oinochoe, a pouring vessel, with a trefoil lip and a tall handle that stands above the body of the vessel. The handle has an elaborate construction: it is tripartite, with roundels and half-roundels where it meets the narrow, flat rim. Flat panels with low relief abstract zoomorphic, possibly avian forms join the handle to the inside of the spout and the exterior of the shoulder. Full-size oinochoe like this one are often found in graves as offerings, and they also seem to have been a major part of monumental sculpture. Comes with custom stand. Size: 7.7" L x 7.5" W x 7.35" H (19.6 cm x 19 cm x 18.7 cm); height on stand: 9.05" (23 cm)

Provenance: private Minnesota, USA collection
