Item Details
Description
Greece, Athens, Attic period, ca. 5th century BCE. A delicate miniature oinochoe, a pouring vessel, with a curved handle that rises high above the body of the vessel, a narrow neck, a round body, and a flared rim. It stands on a low disk foot. Around the shoulder is a delicate line of incised loops. This style of oinochoe is also sometimes known as an olpe, characterized by the tall handle that rises above the rim. The black glaze has a fine sheen from firing, meant to imitate the look of metal, especially bronze. Size: 3.2" W x 4.3" H (8.1 cm x 10.9 cm)

Included is a thermoluminescence (TL) test from QED Laboratoire, Aix-en-Provence, France, that concludes that the age is accurate.

Provenance: private Monsieur Gerard Boyer collection, Paris, France, acquired in the 1970's
