Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE. A fine example of a kris (or keris), a traditional Indonesian sword. The sheath has a wide upper portion which complements the form of the blade and is carved from a caramel-hued hard wood. The handle has the form of an abstract Garuda, a mythical avian figure in ancient Indonesian lore, and is separated from the blade with a circular brass guard. The blade has stunning striations running the length of the curved serpentine blade which tapers gently to a sharpened point. A wonderful sword rife with stunning details and expert craftsmanship. Size with sheath: 18.5" L (47 cm); length of blade: 14" L (35.6 cm).
