Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire, ca. late 12th to 15th century CE. A detailed bronze statue of Buddha, seated on a tiered throne, perhaps composed of the writhing body of the giant naga, the serpent king Muchilinda. This Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward and touching the lotus throne. His left hand lies in his lap with the palm upright. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as he defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. Size: 3.5" H (8.9 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private S.W. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
