Central Asian BMAC Bronze Adze - Incised Iconography
Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Bactria-Margiana (BMAC), modern day central Asia, ca. early 2nd millennium BCE. A heavy bronze adze cast from a single piece with a narrow blade end and a sharp, hooked tang at the other. A thick shank separates the two ends and probably would have been wrapped during hafting. On the blade is an incised design of a standing bird - possibly a duck - and on the obverse side, along the shank, is an incised phallic design. Size: 7.5" L x 1.5" W (19 cm x 3.8 cm); height on stand: 2.9" (7.4 cm)

Central Asia was a crossroads during this time period; people here were influenced by Iran in the west and the Indus Valley civilizations like Harappa in the east; however, they had their own distinctive bronze style.

Provenance: Ex-Kavet Collection, Massachusets, acquired 1975
