Description
Near East, Luristan to Achaemenid, ca. 1000 to 330 BCE. A very unusual drinking vessel made of bronze with a finely delineated pictorial scene featuring a pair of horned, ungulate animals - possibly twin ibexes or saiga antelopes - bowing their heads toward a central bunch of leafy ferns or palm-like plants. Above and below are narrow registers of stylized, repeated wave motifs. The vessel's form is relatively simple with concave walls, a tiered base, and a separately cast, attached bifurcated handle; however, the figural program is particularly intriguing! Size: 4.5" W including handle x 4.125" H (11.4 cm x 10.5 cm)
