Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Periods, ca. 712 to 30 BCE. A pair of miniature ushabti (shabti) made of reddish terracotta and covered with white paint. Both have their arms crossed over their chests and are holding hoes. Shabti (or ushabti) dolls are figures shaped like adult male or female mummies wearing traditional ancient Egyptian headdresses. The ancient Egyptians believed that after they died, their spirits would have to work in the "Field of Reeds" owned by the god of the underworld, Osiris. This meant doing agricultural labor - and it was required by all members of society, from workers to pharaohs. Size of largest: 0.7" W x 2.1" H (1.8 cm x 5.3 cm)
Provenance: private Carlton Collection, Los Angeles, California, acquired between 1965 and 1980

The smaller of the two has been repaired. Some remaining pigment in the lower profile areas of both.
