Description
Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca.3rd century BCE to 2nd century CE. A very rare, miniature red and turquoise paste glass vessel of a sweet form comprised of a raised round base, a globular body, narrow cylindrical neck, ring-shaped collared rim, and a single handle bridging rim to shoulder. Its surface is elegantly decorated with a meandering sinuous line of turquoise blue that complements the rich russet red hues perfectly. Size: 1.5" in diameter x 1.5" H (3.8 cm x 3.8 cm)
Egyptian paste glass was invented approximately 7,000 years ago. It is a material containing very little or no clay but can be modeled, carved, or pressed into molds. The blue-green turquoise decoration on this piece lead one to wonder whether it was believed to possess apotropaic effects, as blue-green glazed stones and blue-green faience carved and sculpted miniatures in the ancient Near East and Egypt were believed to possess protective powers.
Provenance: Ex- private Orange County, CA collection acquired before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
