Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, ca. 712 to 332 BCE. A group of four scarab amulets, three fairly identical in form, the classic version of a scarab with wings, legs, and flat underside with hieroglyphs. Two of those are white steatite and the third is faience. The fourth, also white steatite, is of an unusual, abstract form, symmetrical but with a flat base that also has hieroglyphs. Amulets of the scarab were hugely popular for over a thousand years in ancient Egypt, a symbol with staying power similar to that of the Christian cross; they seem to have been worn and carried by the living, although by the time of the Third Intermediate Period, they had also become part of the increasingly elaborate battery of items to be placed into graves for protection of the dead. Size of largest: 0.9" W x 0.35" H (2.3 cm x 0.9 cm)
Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
