Description
RECORDS OF ENGINE COMPANY NO. 1. 1820 TO 1830 [i.e. 1832]. Watertown, MA, 1820-32. 4to (7.5" x 6.5".) Ledger in manuscript, on laid paper. 65 leaves containing manuscript, several other leaves blank. Period sheep over marbled boards, with manuscript label to front board, hinges cracked but all intact, rubbed and worn, ink-stain to front cover. Contents clean and Very Good. ****************************** Contains the meeting minutes and membership records of the first fire engine company in Watertown, MA (near Boston.) Lists absences, new members, men assigned to clean the engines, committees for the company's annual suppers, and details of a firefighting competition. In 1832 the company voted to "abandon the engine on account of her being unfit for use," and this is the ledger's final entry.
