Description
[Evans, Thomas]. A SERIES OF LETTERS, ADDRESSED TO THOMAS JEFFERSON, ESQ. PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, CONCERNING HIS OFFICIAL CONDUCT AND PRINCIPLES; WITH AN APPENDIX OF IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS, AND ILLUSTRATIONS. BY TACITUS. Philadelphia: For E. Bronson, Printed by Thos. Smith, 1802. 8vo. 127, [1], [45 Appendix], [1], [2 ads] pp. Disbound. Early ink to title, some light toning and foxing, else Very Good. ****************************************** First Edition. A bitter Federalist take on President Jefferson's first year, charging that he has engineered "the establishment of that political persecution and intolerance" which he had disclaimed in his inaugural address. He has ousted from office "men of the utmost respectability" merely because they were Federalists, and sought "to stigmatize" them as a "political sect" and closet monarchists. A master of "calumny," Jefferson seeks the "destruction of the fundamental barriers of the constitution, placed between the legislative and executive departments of the government of the United States." [Howes E229; Haynes 5789; Gaines 02-28; Tompkins; Jefferson 63]
