Description
1797 First Bank of New York 1st American Banking Manuscript Handwritten Ledger

An incredibly rare handwritten 18th-century ledger and account of the First Bank of New York. In late 1700s America, shortly after the Revolutionary War, there became a growing need for a bank that was not associated with Great Britain. The Bank of New York was established in 1784 and was the first American bank to provide the United States Government with a loan. It is notable that figures such as Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin were some of the first shareholders of the First Bank of New York.

This ledger belonged to one Mr. Charles Sherry and records numerous transactions that provide a look into life in 18th century New York.
