Frances Hodgson Burnett's first novel. Burnett was born in Manchester, England, was familiar with the novel's Lancashire's coal mines, and emigrated to the United States at the age of 16. Copyright 1877 by Scribner, Armstrong; firm became Charles Scribner's Sons in 1878. An early printing with "Sue. Dec. 25th 1879" on front flyleaf. Jacob Blanck; Bibliography of American Literature; BAL 2033. Lyle H Wright; American Fiction 1876-1900: A Contribution toward a Bibliography; III 817.
Worn but solid early printing of Burnett's popular, break-through first book, a gritty romance novel whose heroine Joan Lowrie labors as a pit-girl at the mouth of a Lancashire coal mine. Much of the novel's dialogue contains Lancastrian dialect, one of many things that separates the poor working class villagers from the novel's middle class characters. That Lass explores Victorian issues of social concern: women at work, mine safety and technological change, social mobility, class differences of language and dress, and women's education.
