Description
(Japanese, 1901-1986)
Bamburgh Castle, signed lower right "Oguiss" and inscribed verso, oil on canvas, 19-3/4 x 25 in.; carved and parcel gilt wood frame, 27-3/4 x 32 in., with glazing and hand-made Japanese box
Notes: Chisabura F. Yamada was a curator and noted scholar of the intersection of Eastern and Western art and values. His tenure as the director of the Museum of Western Art in Tokyo lasted from the 1950's through the 1970's. He is perhaps best known for his ability to communicate the value of the Japanese Arts of ceramics, drawing or textile to the Western world where often only painting was considered "high art."
